Professional mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5520 is a 15.6-inch 4K touchscreen laptop built for professional users who need reliable performance in a portable chassis. It combines an Intel Core i7-7820HQ quad-core processor with 16GB of DDR5 memory and a 512GB SSD. Dedicated NVIDIA Quadro M1200 graphics handle demanding visual workloads. The system ships with Windows 10 Home installed.

Thermals and acoustics

The supplier notes a 9-hour battery life, which suggests the cooling solution manages heat effectively during typical business tasks without excessive fan noise. The quad-core CPU operates at a 2.9GHz base frequency within a slim silver enclosure weighing 7.55 lbs. Power draw remains balanced for extended unplugged use across office and field environments.

ISV-certified Quadro graphics

The NVIDIA Quadro M1200 GPU is the specification that determines suitability for certified professional applications such as CAD, 3D modelling and video editing. Buyers who require consumer GeForce drivers or higher GPU compute performance for rendering farms should consider other options. The 512GB SSD and 32GB memory ceiling also define the storage and expansion limits for large project files.

Questions about this item

How do I install additional memory in the Precision 5520, and what slot mistake do people make?

The laptop has two memory slots supporting up to 32 GB total. The common error is buying a single 32 GB module instead of two 16 GB DDR5 sticks, because each slot maxes out at 16 GB.

Which component will need replacement first under heavy daily use?

The 512 GB SSD has a finite write endurance; once its program/erase cycles are exhausted the drive must be swapped, while the soldered DDR5 memory and Quadro M1200 GPU are not user-replaceable.

What performance limit appears first during a long rendering workload?

The i7-7820HQ processor reaches its thermal ceiling before the Quadro M1200, causing CPU clocks to throttle while the GPU still has headroom.
