Precision 5520 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5520 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation with a 1920 x 1080 UltraSharp IPS panel. It runs on an Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor at 2.90 GHz with 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a 512 GB NVMe SSD. Graphics are handled by an NVIDIA Quadro M1200 with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit comes pre-installed.

Suited for ISV-certified apps.

This configuration suits engineers and designers who need certified drivers for CAD, DCC or analysis software in a thin chassis. The 32 GB memory ceiling is fixed at the factory maximum, so buyers who anticipate larger datasets or virtual-machine workloads should look at a platform with expandable memory.

32 GB soldered DDR4 limit

The system supports a maximum of 32 GB DDR4 across two slots, and the supplied unit already populates that limit. No further memory can be added, making the installed capacity the decisive specification for long-term viability.

Questions about this item

How do I add a second drive using the 2.5-inch bay?

Remove the bottom cover, place the 2.5-inch SSD or HDD in the bay, and secure it with the mounting screws; the step often missed is connecting the drive to the motherboard header before replacing the cover.

What maintenance will the 32 GB DDR4 memory need later?

The memory is already at the 32 GB maximum supported, so no upgrade is possible; only reseating the modules or cleaning dust from the slots may be required over time.

What thermal limit appears first during sustained heavy workloads on the i7-7820HQ and M1200 4 GB GDDR5?

The CPU and GPU share a compact cooling solution, so temperature throttling typically triggers before power or noise limits become noticeable.
