Ready-to-use business laptop

The Lenovo ThinkPad T540P arrives with Windows 10 Professional 64-bit already installed so it can join a domain or encrypt drives without extra setup. A fourth-generation Intel Core i5-4200M dual-core processor running at 2.60 GHz and 8 GB of DDR3 memory handle office suites and browser workloads. The 14.1-inch LED panel shows 1366 x 768 resolution in a 16:9 wide format.

Storage and optical drive included

A 2.5-inch 1TB solid-state drive supplies the operating system, applications and user data on a single volume with no mechanical hard disk to slow boot or wake times. The internal DVD-RW drive reads and writes CDs and DVDs for legacy media or installer discs. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 drives the built-in screen and external monitors through the video outputs.

Connectivity and mounting practicalities

VGA and Mini DisplayPort connectors let the laptop drive a projector or a second display without adapters. Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cover wired and wireless networks. A 720p webcam, Trusted Platform Module chip and the classic ThinkPad keyboard with TrackPoint complete the feature set. Buyers who need a touchscreen, a higher-resolution panel or a discrete GPU should consider other models.

Questions about this item

Will the 8 GB DDR3 memory need upgrading for heavier workloads?

The system ships with 8 GB DDR3 installed; the platform supports up to 16 GB total if you add a second module later.

What limits sustained performance first — thermals or the 2.60 GHz dual-core CPU?

The Intel Core i5-4200M dual-core processor running at 2.60 GHz with Intel HD Graphics 4600 will hit its frequency ceiling before thermal throttling becomes the primary bottleneck.

How loud and hot does the 14.1-inch chassis get during all-day use?

Integrated graphics and a 2.60 GHz dual-core CPU keep heat moderate; fan noise stays low at idle and rises to a noticeable but not intrusive level under continuous load.
