Precision 5530 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5530 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation built around a 6-core Intel Core i7-8850H processor with 16 GB of DDR4 memory. It targets engineers, designers and analysts who need certified professional graphics in a thin silver chassis. A 3840 x 2160 UHD IPS touch display covers 72 % colour gamut for colour-critical review work.

Aluminium chassis with Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0

The premium aluminium build houses dual fans for sustained thermal performance under load. Connectivity includes two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port with four-lane PCIe bandwidth and one HDMI 2.0 output for external 4K monitors. A combined headphone and microphone jack and a 720p webcam complete the daily driver kit.

Dual-drive upgrade from single-SSD configurations

This unit ships with a 512 GB M.2 drive plus a 4 TB SSD, removing the storage ceiling found on base models that offer only 128 GB to 1 TB. The 4 GB GDDR5 Quadro P1000 replaces integrated graphics for ISV-certified applications. Buyers who need more than 16 GB of memory or a newer CPU generation should specify a different configuration.

Questions about this item

What does the Thunderbolt 3 port cap at in practice?

The Thunderbolt 3 port carries x4 PCIe lanes and supports HDMI 2.0 output, so external GPUs or docks run at full four-lane speed and 4K 60 Hz displays work without adapters.

What drive form-factors and lengths fit the two storage slots?

One M.2 slot holds the 512 GB boot drive; the second bay accepts a 2.5-inch SATA SSD up to 7 mm thick, which is where the 4 TB unit sits.

How is the second drive installed, and what step do people miss?

Remove the bottom cover, screw the 2.5-inch SATA SSD into the caddy, connect its ribbon cable to the motherboard header, then initialise the disk in Windows Disk Management — the step most skip.
