Precision 5530 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5530 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation built for professionals who need certified graphics and a colour-accurate display in a thin chassis. It ships new with Windows 10 Pro, an 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8850H six-core processor, 8 GB of DDR4 memory and a 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. The dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P1000 with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory targets CAD, 3D modelling and video editing workloads.

InfinityEdge UHD touch display and connectivity

The 3840 x 2160 IPS touchscreen covers 72% colour gamut and uses an InfinityEdge narrow-bezel design for precise visual work. Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port with four lanes of PCIe, an HDMI 2.0 output and a headset jack handle peripherals and external displays. A Dell AC adapter is included in the box.

Upgrading from integrated-graphics laptops

Moving from a system that relies on integrated graphics to the Quadro P1000 delivers certified driver stability for professional applications. The six-core CPU and NVMe storage reduce render and compile times compared with dual-core configurations. Buyers who need more than 8 GB of memory or larger internal storage should look at higher-capacity configurations.

Questions about this item

What speed does the Thunderbolt 3 port cap at in practice?

Thunderbolt 3 provides x4 PCIe bandwidth for external GPUs, docks and high-speed storage, with HDMI 2.0 also available for 4K output.

What physical slots and clearance does the 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD need?

The drive uses a single M.2 2280 slot inside the chassis; no 2.5-inch bay or caddy is present.

How is the DDR4 memory installed, and what step do people get wrong?

Two SODIMM slots support up to 32 GB DDR4; the common mistake is leaving a module unseated so the latch does not click.
