Precision 5820 Xeon Workstation

The Dell Precision 5820 Tower is a mid-tower workstation built around an Intel Xeon W-2135 six-core processor running at 3.7 GHz with a 4.5 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four slots and a 2 TB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive. An Nvidia Quadro P5000 graphics card with 16 GB of GDDR5X memory provides four DisplayPort outputs for multi-display setups. The system includes a 950 W 80 Plus Gold power supply and Windows 11 Pro.

Sustained Load Behaviour

The 950 W Gold-rated supply delivers stable power for extended compute or rendering sessions without throttling the Xeon W-2135 or the Quadro P5000. ECC memory protects data integrity during long calculations, while the NVMe drive maintains consistent throughput for large project files. The tower chassis provides airflow for the CPU and GPU under continuous load, and the registered DDR4 modules support reliable operation over many hours.

Upgrade Context

This workstation replaces older towers that lack ECC memory support or sufficient PCIe bandwidth for modern GPUs and NVMe storage. The eight DIMM slots allow expansion up to 256 GB when workloads outgrow the factory 32 GB configuration. Buyers who need more than four DisplayPort outputs or require a different GPU architecture should verify compatibility before purchasing. The LGA 2066 platform limits future CPU upgrades to the same socket generation.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the 950 W 80 Plus Gold power supply run under sustained load?

The 950 W 80 Plus Gold unit delivers up to 90 % efficiency, so less waste heat reaches the chassis fans during all-day workloads.

Which display cables do I need for the Quadro P5000's four DisplayPort outputs?

The card provides four DisplayPort connectors; have DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort or active DisplayPort-to-HDMI cables ready for each monitor.

Will my existing DDR4-2666 ECC RDIMMs work alongside the four installed 8 GB modules?

Yes, the eight-slot motherboard supports up to 256 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory, so compatible sticks can be added to the populated slots.
