Mobile workstation with 17.3" display

The Dell Precision 7710 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an Intel Core i7-6820HQ processor running at 2.7 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of memory and a 1 TB solid-state drive. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed. The unit is supplied new and includes the AC adapter.

Four USB 3.0 ports and HDMI output

Four USB 3.0 ports provide bandwidth for external storage, input devices and peripherals without a separate hub. The HDMI port drives an external monitor or projector for multi-screen workflows. The integrated solid-state drive frees the internal 2.5-inch bay that a mechanical drive would occupy. The included AC adapter powers the system and charges the internal battery.

Replaces older 17-inch workstations

This system replaces earlier 17-inch mobile workstations that rely on mechanical hard drives and lower memory capacities. The jump is worthwhile when workflows demand the responsiveness of solid-state storage and 16 GB of RAM for large datasets or virtual machines. Buyers who need more than 16 GB of memory or multiple internal drives should consider other configurations.

Questions about this item

How long can the Core i7-6820HQ run at 2.7 GHz before thermal throttling reduces the clock?

The quad-core processor maintains its 2.7 GHz base frequency as long as the cooling system can dissipate heat; sustained loads will eventually trigger throttling once the chassis reaches its thermal limit.

What are the typical fan noise and surface temperatures when the Precision 7710 runs a full-day workload?

Under continuous load the dual-fan cooling keeps the keyboard deck warm but not hot, and fan noise rises to a noticeable but not distracting level in a quiet room.

Which peripherals and cables must I already own to use the four USB 3.0 ports and HDMI output on this laptop?

You need USB 3.0-compatible devices or cables for the four ports and an HDMI cable for the video output; the AC adapter is included with the unit.
