Mobile workstation for CAD and engineering

The Dell Precision 7730 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor and 128 GB of DDR4 memory. A dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P3200 with 6 GB GDDR5 drives professional graphics workloads. The 1920 x 1080 FHD IPS panel covers 72% colour gamut. Windows 10 Pro is installed on a 256 GB NVMe SSD.

Thermals and power in daily use

Dell describes the cooling as revolutionary, designed to sustain performance inside a thinner and lighter chassis. The hexa-core CPU runs at 2.20 GHz base and can reach 4.10 GHz with Turbo Boost. The Quadro P3200 is optimised for computer-aided design applications and offers performance comparable to a GeForce GTX 1060. Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports handle peripheral connectivity.

Upgrading from older mobile workstations

This configuration replaces earlier Precision models that maxed out at lower memory capacities or used previous-generation Quadro graphics. The jump is worth it when you need 128 GB of RAM for large assemblies, simulation datasets or heavy multitasking. Buyers who require more than 256 GB of internal storage or a higher-resolution display should look at other configurations.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 128 GB DDR4 RAM, and what step do people get wrong?

The laptop ships with 128 GB DDR4 already installed. If you ever add or replace modules, the step people miss is seating both SO-DIMMs fully until the retention clips click on each side.

What maintenance or replacement will the 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD need later?

The SSD has no moving parts, so routine maintenance is not required. Replacement is only needed if capacity runs out or a drive health tool reports a critical warning.

What limit shows up first on the NVIDIA Quadro P3200 with 6 GB GDDR5 under sustained load?

The GPU thermal ceiling is the first limit. Extended heavy rendering will cause the 3200 to throttle clock speeds to stay within its temperature envelope.
