Dual 28-core Xeon workstation

The DELL Precision 7820 is a tower workstation equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 6132 processors, each delivering 14 cores at 2.60 GHz for a total of 28 cores. It targets engineers, designers and data specialists who need sustained multi-threaded performance for rendering, simulation or large-assembly CAD work.

Upgrade from single-socket or lower-core systems

Moving from a single-socket workstation or a dual-socket system with fewer cores gives a measurable jump when workloads scale across all 28 threads. The step is worth it when project complexity exceeds the memory bandwidth or thread count of the previous platform and the software licences allow full utilisation.

DDR4 ECC registered memory and SATA storage limits

The 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory fills 12 slots, leaving no room for expansion without replacing modules. The installed 512 GB SATA SSD offers reliable throughput for active projects but caps sequential speed well below modern PCIe alternatives, so large dataset workflows will eventually demand faster storage.

Questions about this item

What tower dimensions and power connectors must my rack or desk space accommodate for the Precision 7820?

The Precision 7820 is a full-size tower workstation; allow ample depth and height for the chassis and ensure your PDU or wall outlet can supply the dual-processor power draw.

Which memory slots should I populate first when adding DDR4 ECC Registered modules to the 12-slot motherboard?

Follow the Dell memory population guide: fill the slots associated with CPU1 before CPU2, matching channel pairs for optimal performance.

When will the 512 GB SATA SSD likely need replacement under heavy write workloads?

SATA SSD endurance varies by drive model; monitor SMART health attributes and plan replacement when the media wear indicator approaches the rated limit.
