Precision 7920 dual-Xeon workstation

The Dell Precision 7920 tower pairs two Intel Xeon Gold 5122 quad-core processors running at 3.6 GHz, giving eight physical cores and sixteen threads with hyperthreading. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC memory across 24 DIMM slots and a 500 GB NVMe M.2 SSD on a PCIe adapter card. Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed for immediate deployment in professional CAD and visualisation workflows.

Thermals noise and 1400 W power supply

A 1400 W unit feeds both CPUs, the AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100 8 GB GDDR5 graphics card and all memory slots under sustained load. The tower chassis uses directed airflow paths to move heat from the dual-socket board and full-height GPU without relying on aggressive fan curves. Typical office ambient temperatures keep internal component deltas within spec during extended rendering sessions.

Build connectors and daily implications

The full-height tower provides 24 DIMM slots for future expansion up to 1536 GB and multiple PCIe slots for additional accelerators or I/O cards. A DVD±RW drive remains fitted for legacy media access. The Radeon Pro WX 7100 offers DisplayPort outputs for multi-monitor arrays without adapters. Buyers needing more than 500 GB of primary NVMe storage or a second high-power GPU should plan additional drives or power budget accordingly.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD with its PCIe adapter card into the Precision 7920 tower?

Power off the workstation, open the side panel, insert the NVMe M.2 module into the PCIe adapter card, seat the card firmly into an available PCIe x16 or x8 slot, close the case, then boot into Windows 11 Pro where the drive appears ready for use.

What memory upgrades will this Precision 7920 support later?

The system uses DDR4-2666 ECC RDIMMs across 24 DIMM slots, 12 per CPU, and supports up to 1536GB total capacity when all slots are populated with compatible modules.

Where does the 1400W power supply hit its limit under sustained dual-Xeon and Radeon Pro WX 7100 load?

Continuous full-load operation on both Gold 5122 processors at 3.6GHz plus the 8GB GDDR5 GPU will draw near the 1400W rating, making the PSU the first bottleneck during extended rendering or compute tasks.
