Enterprise-class 2 TB SAS drive

The DELL Constellation ES.3 ST2000NM0023 is a 3.5-inch enterprise hard drive with a 7200 RPM spindle and a 128 MB cache. It connects through a SAS interface and ships with a tray for server or array mounting. The 2 TB capacity suits bulk storage in compatible bays.

Built for server and storage arrays

This unit targets administrators expanding SAS-based RAID sets, JBOD enclosures or backup appliances that accept 3.5-inch enterprise drives. Buyers needing a drive for a consumer desktop or laptop should look elsewhere, as the SAS interface and physical tray are not compatible with standard PC drive bays or controllers.

6 Gbps SAS interface

The drive communicates over a 6 Gbps SAS link, which is the single specification that determines whether it will function in your chassis or controller. Verify that your backplane or HBA supports this interface before purchase.

Questions about this item

How often will the 128 MB cache need attention or replacement?

The 128 MB cache is built into the drive electronics and has no serviceable parts; it does not require maintenance or separate replacement during the drive's operating life.

What is the first limit reached when the 7200 RPM SAS drive runs continuously?

Sustained operation is typically limited by the 6 Gbps SAS interface bandwidth before the 7200 RPM mechanics reach their maximum throughput ceiling.

How much heat and noise does the 3.5 inch 2TB drive produce during all-day use?

The 3.5 inch form factor with 7200 RPM rotation generates measurable heat and audible seek noise under continuous load; ensure adequate chassis airflow for cooling.
