Dell Cheetah 15K.6 146GB SAS Drive

This new Dell Cheetah 15K.6 drive delivers 146GB of storage on a 3.5in SAS interface spinning at 15000RPM. A 16MB buffer and 300Mbps external transfer rate support demanding server workloads. The ST3146356SS model is built for internal desktop or server installations. Condition is new from the supplier.

Suits servers needing high-speed SAS storage

This drive fits systems with a 3Gb/s SAS controller and a 3.5in internal bay. Buyers whose hardware only accepts 2.5in form factors cannot use this unit. Environments requiring larger capacities or different interface protocols should consider other options.

3Gb/s SAS interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the 3Gb/s SAS interface. Your host bus adapter or backplane must support this exact standard for the drive to function. Verify the controller documentation before purchase.

Questions about this item

Will the SAS interface or the 15000 RPM motor need servicing first?

The 3.5" SAS 3Gb/s interface is a passive connector with no moving parts, so the 15000 RPM spindle motor and actuator will require attention long before the interface.

What limits sustained write throughput on this 146 GB drive?

The external transfer rate caps at 300 Mbps, so the 3 Gb/s SAS link and 16 MB buffer cannot be fully utilised during long sequential writes.

How much heat does the 15000 RPM mechanism produce in a 3.5 inch bay?

A 15000 RPM spindle generates noticeably more heat than slower drives; ensure the server chassis provides direct airflow across the 3.5 inch frame.
