Thickness is the fit test that catches most buyers. Many laptops accept 7 mm or 9.5 mm drives, thin models take only 7 mm, and 15 mm drives, which carry the highest capacities, fit only bays designed for them, such as server drive bays and some external enclosures. A thinner drive usually fits a taller bay, with a spacer if needed, but not the reverse. Read the max height in the listing, or measure the drive you are replacing.
Then check the connector. SATA 6 Gb/s is standard on current laptops and also runs at the older 3 and 1.5 Gb/s speeds, so a newer drive works in an older SATA machine. Laptops from the IDE era need a 44-pin ATA drive, listed as IDE Ultra ATA100, which is a different connector entirely. SAS drives are for servers and need a SAS controller. Match the model number against your laptop's drive list when it is a branded machine.
Most laptop drives spin at 5,400 RPM, which keeps them quiet, cool and kind to battery life. 7,200 RPM models respond faster but run warmer and draw more power, and 10,000 or 15,000 RPM drives are SAS parts for servers. If speed is the goal rather than capacity, a 2.5-inch SSD fits the same bay and is a far bigger upgrade, while a hard drive makes sense for bulk capacity or a secondary bay.
