Enterprise SAS Drive

The Dell ST6000NM0034 is a 6 TB SAS hard drive built for server and storage arrays that demand consistent throughput. Its 7200 RPM spindle speed and 12 Gb/s interface suit workloads such as bulk data ingest, backup targets and near-line archives where capacity per drive matters more than latency.

Array Integration

The 3.5 inch form factor slides into standard hot-swap bays and connects directly to SAS controllers or expanders without adapters. Dual-port SAS connectivity provides path redundancy, while the drive’s native command queuing helps the controller optimise I/O order across multiple simultaneous streams.

Capacity Headroom

Six terabytes gives room for weeks of incremental backups or large media libraries before a second spindle is required. Sequential workloads saturate the 12 Gb/s link comfortably; random, small-block queues will hit the mechanical latency ceiling of a 7200 RPM drive well before the interface fills.

Questions about this item

Will the 7200 RPM spindle speed become the throughput bottleneck under sustained writes?

At 7200 RPM the mechanical latency limits sustained write throughput before the 12 Gb/s SAS link saturates.

How much heat and noise does the 3.5 in SAS drive produce when running all day?

The 3.5 in form factor at 7200 RPM generates typical enterprise HDD heat and audible seek noise during continuous operation.

Which SAS host bus adapter or backplane must I already own for this 12 Gb/s drive to work?

A 12 Gb/s SAS HBA, RAID controller or server backplane with a 3.5 in drive bay is required for the ST6000NM0034 to function.
