  • 5 inch LFF form factor fits standard server bays
  • Hot-swap capability enables drive replacement without downtime

Dell 8TB SAS drive for PowerEdge servers

This 3.5-inch enterprise hard disk delivers 8000GB of storage over a 12Gbps SAS interface. It spins at 7.2K RPM and supports hot-swap installation in compatible Dell PowerEdge servers. The tray sticker may not be included with the unit.

Sustained workload behaviour

The 7.2K spindle speed provides steady throughput for nearline archives, backups and bulk data repositories. SAS signalling maintains consistent performance during long sequential transfers without the latency spikes seen on consumer interfaces. Hot-swap capability allows drive replacement while the array remains online.

Compatibility checks before ordering

Verify that your PowerEdge chassis accepts 3.5-inch LFF SAS drives and that the backplane supports 12Gbps speeds. Confirm the correct drive tray or caddy for your specific server model at checkout. This drive is not suitable for desktop PCs or laptops lacking SAS controllers and 3.5-inch bays.

Questions about this item

How much power does the 8TB 7.2K SAS drive draw when running continuously in a server?

The drive is a 3.5-inch nearline SAS model rated for 12Gbps; enterprise nearline drives of this class typically idle around 7–8 W and peak near 10–11 W under sustained writes, so plan your power budget accordingly.

What must I already have in my PowerEdge to install this 3.5-inch SAS drive?

You need an available 3.5-inch hot-swap drive bay with a SAS backplane and the correct Dell drive carrier tray for your specific PowerEdge model.

Will this 12Gbps SAS drive work in an older PowerEdge that only has a 6Gbps backplane?

Yes, SAS is backward compatible; the drive will negotiate down to 6Gbps on a 6Gbps backplane and function normally, though at the lower link speed.
