Capacity and interface

This Dell ST9300603SS is a 300GB 2.5-inch SAS hard drive spinning at 10000RPM with a 16MB cache. It includes a tray for hot-swap installation in compatible bays. The drive uses a SAS 2 interface delivering 6Gb/s bandwidth.

Server builders and array expanders

This drive suits administrators adding capacity to existing SAS arrays or replacing failed units in Dell enclosures. Buyers who need larger capacities or solid-state speeds should look at other options.

Sustained workload behaviour

The 10000RPM spindle maintains consistent throughput during long read and write sequences typical of database and logging workloads. Hot-swap support allows replacement without powering down the chassis.

Questions about this item

What server or storage array do I need that accepts a 2.5" SAS 6 Gb/s drive with a Dell hot-swap tray?

Any system with a 2.5" SAS hot-swap bay and a SAS 2 (6 Gb/s) backplane will accept the ST9300603SS and its included Dell tray.

Will this 10 000 RPM SAS 2 drive work on an older SAS 1 (3 Gb/s) backplane?

Yes, SAS 2 drives negotiate down to 3 Gb/s on a SAS 1 backplane, so the 300 GB drive will operate at the slower link speed.

How can I verify the drive is running at 10 000 RPM and the 16 MB cache is active after installation?

Check the drive's reported rotational speed and cache size in the RAID controller BIOS or OS utilities such as smartctl or Dell OpenManage.
