Dell Constellation 500 GB SATA drive

The Dell Constellation ST9500530NS is a 500 GB 2.5 inch SATA hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM with a 32 MB cache. It is built for servers or workstations that need a 3 Gb/s SATA drive in a small form factor. The unit ships new with an R-series caddy tray included for direct mounting.

SATA 3 Gb/s interface limit

The drive connects through a SATA 3 Gb/s interface, so maximum throughput is capped at that link speed. Sequential transfers will not exceed the bus ceiling even though the platters rotate at 7200 RPM. Systems with only 6 Gb/s ports will still work, but the drive will negotiate down to 3 Gb/s.

Installation with supplied tray

The included R-series tray aligns with standard 2.5 inch drive bays and uses the same screw pattern as other Dell caddies. No extra brackets are required if the chassis accepts that tray type. The only common issue is inserting the tray into a bay that expects a different latch style, which prevents the drive from seating fully.

Questions about this item

Which capacity version of the ST9500530NS should I pick for a server rebuild?

This model is offered in a single 500 GB capacity, so there is no version choice to make.

What does the 7200 RPM rating mean once the drive is installed in a server?

The platters spin at 7200 revolutions per minute, giving faster random access than slower-spinning laptop drives while still fitting a 2.5 inch bay.

What does the 3 Gb/s SATA interface limit in practice?

The SATA 3 Gb/s link sets the maximum bus transfer rate; actual throughput will be lower and depends on the drive's own media speed and system overhead.
