Barebone chassis for custom builds

The Dell T550 is a tower server barebone delivered without a processor, memory, storage, expansion cards or power supply. Its 3.5-inch eight-bay chassis provides a configurable foundation for integrators who want to select every internal component. Weighing 60 units, the unit arrives as an empty framework ready for assembly.

Suits integrators, not plug-and-play buyers

This barebone suits system builders who specify their own CPUs, drives and add-in cards and who are comfortable sourcing a compatible power supply separately. Buyers who need a complete server with pre-validated components, installed operating system or immediate deployment should consider a fully configured system instead.

Eight 3.5-inch drive bays define storage capacity

The chassis accommodates up to eight 3.5-inch drives, which sets the maximum internal storage device count for the build. Anyone requiring more than eight bays or a different form factor such as 2.5-inch-only layouts will need a different chassis.

Questions about this item

Will the eight 3.5-inch drive bays need any caddy replacements over time?

The chassis uses standard Dell 3.5-inch drive carriers; they can be swapped individually if a latch or rail wears out.

What limits the number of drives I can run continuously in the eight bays?

The barebone includes no power supply, so the PSU you choose determines how many 3.5-inch drives can spin up and run together.

How loud and hot does the tower get when it runs all day with eight drives?

Noise and heat depend entirely on the fans, CPU cooler and power supply you install; the barebone chassis itself adds no active cooling.
