Dell X6858 IDE CDRW Drive

The Dell X6858 is a 48X 32X IDE internal CDR CDRW drive designed for Dimension desktop systems. It reads compact discs at up to 48X speed and writes CD-R media at 32X speed. This new old-stock unit suits users maintaining or restoring legacy Dell Dimension computers that require an original-specification optical drive.

Installation and compatibility notes

The drive fits a standard 5.25-inch drive bay and connects via a 40-pin IDE ribbon cable and a 4-pin Molex power connector. Master or slave operation is set by jumpers on the rear of the unit. Common issues include bent IDE pins during cable connection and jumper conflicts when sharing the cable with a hard drive. Ensure the IDE channel is enabled in BIOS if the drive is not detected. Systems without an available IDE header cannot use this drive.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the drive reads CDs at 48X and rewrites at 32X after installation?

After fitting the drive, insert a known-good CD-R and use burning software to verify the maximum read speed reaches 48X and the write speed holds at 32X without buffer underruns.

What comes in the box and what must I supply for this X6858 IDE drive?

The package contains the internal CDR CDRW drive only; you must provide a 40-pin IDE cable, a spare Molex power connector and mounting screws for your Dimension chassis.
