Redundant modules and the bay they must fit

A hot-plug supply slides into a bay in the chassis and can be swapped while the server runs, provided a second supply is carrying the load. Redundant designs, often called 1+1, keep the machine up when one unit fails. Each server maker uses its own module shape and connector, so a module from one platform or generation generally will not fit another; match the option or spare part number printed on the label of the unit you are replacing.

Standard-form supplies also exist for ordinary cases: ATX units, 1U and 2U rack supplies, and redundant units, which are a fixed frame holding two or more power modules that can be replaced one at a time. Frame and modules must be the same series, so pick replacement modules by the part number on the frame. Efficiency grades such as Platinum matter more in a server than a desktop because the machine runs constantly and the heat has to be removed.

Form factor, mains voltage and wattage

Height and depth are fixed by the chassis: a 1U supply is slim with small, fast fans, while a 2U supply is taller and generally quieter. Check the connector set as well, from the 24-pin ATX main lead to 4+4 pin CPU leads and 6+2 pin PCIe leads on workstation units. Many supplies accept 100 to 240 V, but some high-wattage ones deliver full power only at 200 to 240 V, so match the input range to the outlet or rack distribution unit. Choose a wattage above the server's measured peak.

Questions about Server and Hot-Plug Power Supplies

What does hot-plug mean on a power supply?
A hot-plug, or hot-swap, supply can be removed and replaced while the system is running, as long as another supply is sharing the load. That is how redundant servers keep running through a single supply failure.
Can I replace a 1U supply with a 2U one?
Not unless the chassis was built for it. Height, depth and mounting points are fixed by the case, so replace like with like: the same form factor, equal or higher wattage and the same connector layout.
Do server supplies need a special mains voltage?
Most accept a wide input range such as 100 to 240 V, but some high-wattage models deliver full output only at 200 to 240 V. Read the label ratings and compare them with your outlet or rack distribution unit.
