Dell 4TB Nearline SAS Drive

The Dell XWM1W is a new 4TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive with a SAS 12Gb/s interface and 7200 RPM spindle speed. It is supplied as a bare drive with a hot-swap tray and is intended for desktop or server storage arrays that accept 3.5-inch SAS devices.

Suits SAS backplanes and hot-swap bays

This drive fits systems equipped with 12Gb/s SAS backplanes and hot-swap bays designed for 3.5-inch nearline drives. Buyers whose hardware lacks a SAS controller or hot-swap cage cannot install or use this drive.

SAS 12Gb/s interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines whether this is the correct part is the SAS 12Gb/s interface. The drive must connect to a compatible SAS host bus adapter or RAID controller; it will not function on any other interface type.

Questions about this item

Will the 12Gb/s SAS interface work with my existing 6Gb/s SAS backplane?

The drive negotiates down to 6Gb/s on a 6Gb/s backplane, so it will operate at the slower link speed.

How can I verify the 7200 RPM spindle is running correctly after installation?

Listen for the characteristic 7.2K hum and confirm the drive reports 7200 RPM in your RAID controller or OS disk utility.

Does the bare-drive package include a hot-swap tray or mounting screws?

The drive ships as a bare unit only; a compatible hot-swap tray and any mounting hardware must be sourced separately.
