Dell YC640 8X Slimline DVD±RW Drive

The Dell YC640 is an 8X Slimline IDE internal dual-layer DVD±RW drive built for Precision workstations. It reads and writes DVD and CD media in a compact slot-load form factor. This new drive suits users replacing a failed optical unit or adding disc capability to a compatible bay.

Thermals noise and power

The slimline mechanism draws minimal power from the IDE connection and runs quietly during typical read or write tasks. Heat output stays low inside the chassis without requiring extra cooling. Normal use produces only faint seek noise that blends with system fans.

Questions about this item

How do I install the Dell YC640 slimline IDE DVD±RW drive, and what step do people often miss?

Slide the drive into the Precision slimline bay, connect the 44-pin IDE ribbon and the 4-pin power connector, then secure the retention screw; the step often missed is setting the master/slave jumper to match the cable position.

What maintenance or replacement will the Dell YC640 drive need later?

The laser lens will eventually need cleaning with a lens-cleaning disc, and the tray-loading mechanism may require replacement if the ejection gear wears out after extended use.
