Drill bit for heavy-duty drilling

The Drill America KFD drill bit uses high-speed steel and a 3-flat shank to resist slipping in a 1/2 inch chuck. Its split-point tip starts holes cleanly without a centre punch. The reduced shank allows the 45/64 inch cutter to fit standard large-capacity drill presses and heavy-duty hand drills.

Shank size decides compatibility

A 1/2 inch shank will not fit 3/8 inch or smaller chucks, so the bit is unsuitable for compact cordless drills with limited chuck capacity. Builders who need a smaller shank for lighter machines should choose a different bit. The 3-flat design also prevents rotation in keyless chucks under high torque.

Questions about this item

What hole size will the 45/64 inch bit actually produce in steel?

The bit is ground to 45/64 inch diameter, so it cuts a hole of that exact size in steel when used at the correct speed and feed.

How does the 1/2 inch reduced shank limit the bit in a standard drill chuck?

The 1/2 inch shank fits any chuck that accepts 1/2 inch capacity, but the reduced neck means the chuck grips a smaller diameter than the cutting portion.
