Drill America 1" X 16" Spade Bit

This carbon steel spade bit bores large, flat-bottomed holes in soft and hardwoods. It suits electricians, plumbers and woodworkers running cables, pipes or hardware through timber. The wide blade with sharp cutting spurs removes material quickly while the centre point keeps the bit on target. A hex shank prevents slipping in the drill chuck.

Installation and common issues

Insert the hex shank fully into a standard drill chuck and tighten securely to eliminate wobble. Start the hole at low speed with the centre point engaged before increasing RPM for clean entry. Excessive side pressure can bend the long shaft or cause the spurs to wander, especially in dense hardwood. Clear wood chips frequently to avoid overheating and binding.

Capacity and headroom

The 16-inch overall length provides deep reach for thick beams, joists and stud cavities where shorter bits cannot reach. The 1-inch cutting diameter handles typical conduit, cable bundles and hardware clearance holes in a single pass. Very dense tropical hardwoods or nail-embedded reclaimed timber will dull the carbon steel edges faster, requiring resharpening or replacement for continued clean cuts.
