Purpose and audience

The EASYCEL CNT-013 converts legacy analogue video sources such as composite CVBS or S-video into a modern HDMI signal. It is intended for owners of older cameras, VCRs, DVD players or retro game consoles who want to display that content on a current TV, projector or monitor.

Signal compatibility

The unit accepts 480i NTSC or 576i PAL standard-definition input and automatically detects the colour system including NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL-M and PAL-N. A front-panel switch selects between the composite and S-video sources, which share a single stereo RCA audio input that is embedded into the HDMI stream and also passed through the 3.5 mm jack.

Output capability and limits

The converter upscales the incoming picture to either 720p or 1080p at 60 Hz, selectable by button, and remembers the last setting after a power cycle. It supports only a 16:9 output aspect ratio, so 4:3 material will appear stretched unless the display handles pillar-boxing. Picture quality is ultimately limited by the quality of the analogue source.

Questions about this item

What does the 720p or 1080p upscaled output actually look like on a modern TV?

The converter takes 480i NTSC or 576i PAL sources and scales them to 720p60 or 1080p60 HDMI, so legacy consoles and players fill a widescreen display without the TV’s own scaler adding extra lag.

Which HDMI version does the output use and what does that limit?

The HDMI output carries 720p or 1080p at 60 Hz with embedded stereo audio and is DVI-compatible via a passive adapter, but it does not support higher refresh rates, HDR or 4K resolutions.

How much space does the 11.7 cm by 8.2 cm by 2.25 cm unit need behind my TV?

The compact grey box fits in a shallow cabinet shelf; it requires only the included AC adapter and the supplied composite and S-video cables, which plug directly into the rear RCA and mini-DIN ports.
