5.5 mm DC Gender Changer

This adapter converts a 5.5 x 2.5 mm DC barrel jack to a 5.5 x 2.1 mm plug. It is intended for users who need to connect a power supply with a larger centre pin to a device that requires the smaller 2.1 mm interface. The compact housing makes it a practical accessory for technicians and hobbyists working with various low-voltage equipment.

Build Integration and Port Flexibility

The changer bridges mismatched coaxial power connections without requiring cable modification or soldering. It allows an existing power brick to serve a wider range of routers, switches, CCTV cameras or development boards. The passive design adds no active circuitry, so it simply extends the reach of the current power source.

Thermals, Noise and Power Behaviour

As a passive metal and PC connector, it generates no heat and produces no audible noise during operation. The housing measures about 30 x 24 x 11 mm and weighs roughly 9 g, adding negligible bulk to the cable run. Power delivery is limited only by the rating of the attached supply and cable.

Questions about this item

Will the 5.5 mm outer barrel and 2.5 mm inner pin hold up to daily plugging without loosening?

The connector uses a PC and metal housing sized at 30 by 24 by 11 mm and weighs about 9 g, so the barrel and pin stay secure under normal daily use.

Does the adapter get warm or draw extra power when left connected all day?

It is a passive gender changer with no active electronics, so it produces no heat and adds no measurable power draw during continuous operation.

What must the power supply and device already have for this changer to work?

The power supply needs a 5.5 mm by 2.5 mm DC jack and the device needs a 5.5 mm by 2.1 mm DC plug, or vice versa, for the adapter to connect them.
