Practical limits of DisplayPort 2.1 at 80 Gbps

The 80 Gbps link enables 16K at 60 Hz only when Display Stream Compression 1.2a is active. Uncompressed 16K exceeds the available bandwidth, so DSC must be supported by both source and display. At 4K the cable handles 240 Hz, 165 Hz and 144 Hz without compression. HDCP 2.2 and 1.4 are supported for protected content playback.

Upgrading from DisplayPort 1.4 and when it matters

Moving from a DisplayPort 1.4 cable adds the headroom needed for 8K at 120 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz without chroma subsampling. The jump is worth it when your GPU and monitor both implement DisplayPort 2.1 and you target refresh rates above 144 Hz at 4K or resolutions beyond 8K.
