Read the connector, the version, then the length

Start with the connector on each end, then the version. HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 cables differ in the bandwidth they certify, DisplayPort cables are rated by version, and Ethernet cables by category, from Cat5e through Cat6A to Cat8. A 4K 60 Hz monitor needs at least an HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2 class cable, and higher refresh rates need newer grades. Then choose length: a shorter cable loses less signal, so pick no more than you need. Compare HDMI & Mini HDMI Cables with DisplayPort Monitor Cables once you know what your screen accepts.

Look-alike cables that are not interchangeable

Cables that look alike often are not. Power cords are defined by plug and socket pair, such as NEMA 5-15P to C13 for a desktop PC, and by conductor gauge and amp rating. Internal drive cables, SATA data or older IDE ribbon, are not interchangeable with each other, and right-angle versions fit tight cases. PCIe riser cables are labeled by generation, so a Gen5 card needs a Gen5-rated riser to run at full speed. Audio, coax and instrument cables have their own families. Check connector count too, since a splitter lead has three ends, not two.

Questions about Computer Cables and Cords by Connector Type

Do I need a special HDMI cable for 4K?
For 4K at 60 Hz, look for a cable certified as Premium High Speed, which is rated for HDMI 2.0 bandwidth. For 4K at 120 Hz or 8K you need an Ultra High Speed cable for HDMI 2.1. Older standard cables only manage lower resolutions.
Will a higher-category Ethernet cable make my internet faster?
Not if your connection or router is the limit. Cat5e already carries Gigabit, so a higher category only helps with faster local networks, such as multi-gigabit links, or in electrically noisy places where better shielding reduces errors.
How long can a cable be before the signal gets weak?
It depends on the type. Ethernet is specified to 100 m, passive USB 3.x cables are best kept to a few meters, and HDMI becomes less reliable beyond a few meters at 4K. For longer runs use active cables, boosters or extenders.
