The cable reaches 40Gbps only when both host and device support USB4 Gen 3x2 or Thunderbolt 3/4. On USB 3.2, 3.1 or 2.0 ports it falls back to those slower speeds. Video output requires the host USB-C port to implement DisplayPort Alternate Mode; without Alt Mode no external display will appear.
