Product and audience

The Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 PA03656-B015 is a duplex document scanner built for PC and Mac users who want to digitise paper quickly. It uses two colour CIS sensors with three-colour LED illumination and a 50-page automatic document feeder. A built-in GI microprocessor handles image processing while USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi give flexible connectivity options.

Suitable and unsuitable users

This scanner suits offices and home workers who need fast double-sided scanning up to 25 ppm and the ability to send files directly to iOS or Android devices. It does not support TWAIN or ISIS drivers on Windows and lacks TWAIN support on Mac, so buyers who rely on those interfaces for specialised capture software should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification

The optical resolution is fixed at 600 x 600 dpi and the ADF accepts a maximum document size of 216.00 mm x 360.00 mm with a 50-page capacity. These figures determine whether the scanner can handle your document dimensions and throughput requirements.

Questions about this item

What cables and software come with the ScanSnap iX500 and what must I buy separately?

The box includes USB 3.0 connectivity, Wi-Fi interface, ScanSnap Manager for PC and Mac, ScanSnap Organizer, ABBYY FineReader, Evernote, Card Minder, Adobe Acrobat X Standard for PC, and Rack2-Filer Smart with Magic Desktop for PC. No extra cables or software are required for core scanning.

Should I choose the USB 3.0 or Wi-Fi connection for fastest daily scanning?

USB 3.0 delivers the full 25 ppm duplex speed with lower standby power (1.6 W). Wi-Fi uses the same 25 ppm rating but draws 2.5 W standby and is limited to 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n indoors up to 50 m.

What does the 600 x 600 dpi optical resolution mean for my scanned PDFs?

It captures fine text detail at 600 dpi; Normal mode scans colour at 150 dpi and monochrome at 300 dpi for 25 ppm throughput, while Better mode raises colour to 200 dpi. Maximum document size is 216 x 360 mm.
