Duplex, speed and the stack you really feed it

A duplex scanner captures both sides in one pass, which roughly halves the time for double-sided paper. Speed is quoted in pages per minute, and images per minute counts each side, so a duplex 25 ppm model may also be quoted as 50 ipm. Check the feeder capacity and the largest document size, since limits vary: many models take legal sheets, and some accept very long pages. Plastic cards, receipts and thin paper often need a dedicated mode or a separate carrier sheet.

Sensors, resolution and getting searchable PDFs

Most sheet-fed scanners use contact image sensors, one per side, which keep the body small and the power draw low. CCD sensors suit uneven or slightly curled documents better. For text, 300 dpi gives reliable character recognition; 600 dpi helps with small print and photos but makes bigger files. Connection is usually USB 3.0, which still works in a USB 2.0 port at lower speed. The software that comes with the scanner, especially its recognition and file-naming tools, saves more time than extra resolution.

Questions about Sheet-Fed Document Scanners for Office Paperwork

Is a sheet-fed scanner better than a flatbed?
For stacks of loose pages, yes: it scans quickly and unattended. It cannot take books, bound documents or fragile originals, which need a flatbed. Many offices keep a sheet-fed scanner for volume and a small flatbed for exceptions.
What does ppm versus ipm mean?
Pages per minute counts sheets, while images per minute counts each side scanned. A duplex scanner rated 25 ppm usually scans 50 images per minute. Both figures are measured at a set, often modest, resolution, so real jobs may be slower.
Will an older scanner work with a new computer?
Not always. Most come with their own driver and scanning software, and support can end after major operating system updates. Confirm that your current system version is listed as supported before choosing a model.
