Gateway 48X CD-ROM drive

This is a new internal CD-ROM drive from Gateway with a white bezel. It reads compact discs at up to 48X speed. The unit uses a standard IDE interface for connection to a motherboard. It suits users replacing an optical drive in an older desktop computer.

Fits IDE-equipped desktops.

This drive suits builders repairing or assembling systems that have a 5.25-inch bay and an available IDE header. It is not suitable for laptops, small-form-factor cases without a half-height bay, or motherboards that lack an IDE connector. Buyers needing DVD playback or disc burning should look at a different model.

48X maximum read speed

The key specification is the 48X maximum CD read rate, which determines how quickly data can be retrieved from a disc. This speed applies to standard CD-ROM and CD-R media. The IDE interface and white front bezel are the other defining physical traits.

Questions about this item

Does the Gateway CRD-8483B require a spare IDE connector on the motherboard?

Yes, the drive uses an IDE interface so you need a free IDE header and a matching ribbon cable to install it.

Will this 48X CD-ROM slow down an older IDE hard drive on the same cable?

Both devices share the IDE bus bandwidth; the optical drive runs at up to 48X while the hard drive operates at its own rated speed.

How can I confirm the drive reads at its rated 48X speed after fitting it?

Run a CD speed test utility or watch the transfer rate climb toward the 48X maximum during a large file copy from a known-good disc.
