Laptop internal hard drive

This 2.5-inch HGST Travelstar 7K500 provides 320GB of storage for notebooks and compatible enclosures. It spins at 7200 RPM with a 16MB cache to handle everyday computing tasks. The bare drive ships without cables or mounting brackets. Buyers who need more capacity than 320GB should select a larger model.

SATA 3.0Gb/s interface limits

The drive connects through a SATA 3.0Gb/s interface, capping maximum transfer rates at that speed. Average seek time is 12ms and average latency is 4.2ms for typical access patterns. Read and write operations draw 1.8W, which suits standard laptop power budgets. Systems requiring a faster SATA revision will not gain extra throughput from this drive.

Straightforward 2.5-inch installation

Installation follows the standard 2.5-inch SATA drive procedure: secure the drive in the bay and attach the data and power connectors. Thermal Fly-height Control and TrueTrack technology maintain tracking accuracy under shock or vibration. Handle the bare drive by its edges to avoid damaging the exposed circuit board. Ensure the laptop BIOS detects the drive before closing the chassis.

Questions about this item

Is 320GB the only capacity offered in this Travelstar 7K500 series?

The series spans 120GB to 500GB; 320GB is one option among several.

What does the 7200 RPM rating mean for everyday laptop use?

The spindle spins at 7200 RPM with 12ms average seek and 4.2ms latency, giving quicker application load times than 5400 RPM drives.

Does the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface limit transfer speed in my notebook?

The drive connects over SATA 3.0Gb/s, so sustained throughput is capped at that link rate.
