HGST Travelstar Z5K500 500GB laptop drive

The HGST Travelstar Z5K500 is a 500GB 2.5-inch internal hard drive built for notebook PCs, external enclosures and gaming consoles. It spins at 5400 RPM with an 8MB cache and uses the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface. The 7mm low-profile height allows installation in slim laptop designs where a standard 9.5mm drive will not fit.

Check SATA interface and 7mm bay clearance

Verify that your laptop or device accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive with a maximum height of 7mm and a length of 100.3mm. The drive uses the legacy SATA 3.0Gb/s interface, so the host must provide a compatible SATA data and power connection. Advanced Format 4096-byte sectors are used, so ensure the operating system supports 4K sector alignment for best performance.

Replaces 9.5mm drives in thin laptops and consoles

This model is designed as a direct replacement for thicker 9.5mm hard drives in thin-and-light notebooks, external storage and game consoles. The jump is worth it when your chassis only accommodates a 7mm drive or when you need the lower power draw of the EcoTrac-classified design. Buyers needing higher spindle speeds or larger cache for heavy random workloads should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Does the 0J11285 drive come with mounting screws, a SATA cable or a caddy, or must I buy those separately?

The drive is supplied as a bare 2.5-inch unit only; mounting hardware and cables are not included and must be sourced separately.

The product lists a 500GB capacity — is there a smaller 250GB version of the same Z5K500 series that would fit the same 7mm slot?

Yes, the Travelstar Z5K500 family includes a 250GB model that shares the identical 7mm height and SATA 3.0Gb/s interface.

With the 5400 RPM spindle speed and 8MB cache, what real-world latency should I expect when the drive is installed in a laptop?

The manufacturer specifies an average latency of 5.5ms for this 5400 RPM, 8MB cache configuration.
