HGST Travelstar 7K500 320 GB 2.5-inch drive

This 2.5-inch internal hard drive delivers 320 GB of storage on a SATA interface. It is intended for laptop upgrades or replacements where a 7200 RPM mechanical drive is required. The 16 MB buffer supports everyday workloads in compatible notebooks.

Thermals noise and power

The drive carries the Hitachi EcoTrac classification for low power consumption and halogen-free production. Hitachi specifies best-of-breed operating shock tolerance for sturdy unplugged notebook performance. Normal use stays within typical 2.5-inch SATA thermal and acoustic limits.

Build quality and daily use

The 7K500 series is a fifth-generation 7200 RPM design with hot-swap capability where the host system supports it. SATA/300 connectivity fits standard laptop drive bays and caddies. Approximate weight is 4.06 oz for straightforward mounting in compatible chassis.

Questions about this item

How do I install this 2.5" SATA drive in a laptop and what step is often missed?

Mount the drive in the 2.5" bay, connect the SATA data and power cables, then secure it with the caddy screws — the step often missed is fastening the caddy so vibration does not loosen the SATA connector.

What maintenance or replacement will this 320 GB Travelstar 7K500 need later?

No scheduled maintenance is required; plan to replace the drive if SMART reallocated sectors rise or if the 7200 RPM spindle develops bearing noise after years of use.

What limit appears first during sustained writes on this SATA/300 7200 RPM drive?

The SATA/300 interface caps sustained throughput at 300 MB/s, so the 16 MB cache fills quickly and the 7200 RPM platters become the bottleneck during long sequential writes.
