What it is and who it is for

This HGST Travelstar Z7K320 is a 320 GB 2.5-inch laptop hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM with a 16 MB cache. It suits users upgrading a notebook or compact system that accepts a 7 mm SATA drive and who want faster application response than a 5400 RPM unit can give.

Capacity and headroom

The single-platter design stores 320 GB and replaces standard 9.5 mm drives in most notebooks and external enclosures. It handles everyday multi-tasking and moderate media libraries, but the 320 GB ceiling leaves little room for large game installs or video projects.

Practical limits of the SATA interface

The drive uses the SATA 300 interface, so sequential throughput is capped at that bus speed regardless of the 7200 RPM spindle. Random I/O improves over slower spindles, yet the mechanical latency and 16 MB buffer remain the bottleneck for sustained workloads.

Questions about this item

Will this 7 mm Travelstar Z7K320 fit in the same 9.5 mm bay my old 2.5" SATA drive uses?

The drive is 7 mm high and designed as a direct replacement for standard 9.5 mm HDDs; a 2.5 mm spacer may be needed for a snug fit in some notebooks.

How can I confirm the 7200 RPM drive is performing correctly after installation?

Check that the BIOS or OS reports a SATA 300 link, 7200 RPM spindle speed and 16 MB cache, then run a SMART self-test to verify health.

Does the retail box include a 2.5 mm mounting spacer or only the bare 320 GB drive?

Packing may vary between retail and OEM; the drive itself is supplied, but a 2.5 mm spacer for 9.5 mm bays is not guaranteed in the box.
