Adds eight U.2 NVMe drives via a single PCIe 3.0 x16 slot in a low-profile card
The HighPoint Rocket 1180 is a PCIe 3.0 x16 host bus adapter that adds eight internal U.2 ports to a server or workstation. Each port delivers a dedicated PCIe 3.0 x4 link for up to eight 2.5-inch U.2 NVMe SSDs. The low-profile form factor fits space-constrained chassis while providing high-density storage connectivity. It targets system builders who need maximum NVMe device count in a single slot.
The card operates without an onboard fan, relying on system airflow across its compact 6.55 by 2.71 by 0.83 inch PCB. Passive thermal design keeps noise at zero while maintaining stability for sustained NVMe workloads. Power draw is limited to the slot and attached drives, avoiding auxiliary connectors. Builders must ensure case ventilation supplies adequate airflow over the heatsink area.
A low-profile bracket is fitted for 2U or slim enclosures, while the eight U.2 ports accept standard 2.5-inch drive cables or backplanes. Each connector carries a full x4 electrical link, so cable routing must preserve signal integrity for 8 GT/s operation. The 0.93 lb weight adds minimal stress to the motherboard slot. Systems without eight internal U.2 bays cannot use the full port count.

Insert the low-profile card into a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot and connect eight U.2 cables to the ports; the step often missed is ensuring each cable carries a dedicated PCIe 3.0 x4 link to every drive.
The controller has no moving parts; plan to replace the eight U.2 cables if they show wear, and verify drive firmware updates through the host system.
Each of the eight ports is capped at a PCIe 3.0 x4 link running at 8 GT/s, so aggregate throughput hits that per-port ceiling before the x16 host slot saturates.
