Cable purpose and audience

This two-metre USB-C to USB-C cable carries data at up to 20 Gbps and delivers up to 100 W of power. It suits owners of MacBook Pro models from 2016 through 2021, iPad Pro models from 2018 to 2021, Galaxy S and Note phones, and Pixel devices that have a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode. The nylon-braided jacket is rated for more than 20000 bend cycles and includes an E-Marker chip for safe power negotiation.

Interface and video limits

The cable operates as a USB 3.2 Gen 2.2 link, not a full Thunderbolt cable, although it is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 ports. Video output at 3840 by 2160 resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate works only when the host port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Thunderbolt 4 ports are not supported, and the cable will not enable Thunderbolt-specific features such as daisy-chaining or PCIe tunnelling.

Capacity and headroom

Data transfers to an external SSD or through a USB-C docking station run at the full 20 Gbps rate, moving a full-length HD movie in under 30 seconds. Power delivery reaches 100 W at 20 V and 5 A when paired with a matching PD 3.0 charger; a 96 W adapter delivers its full 96 W, while a 45 W adapter delivers its full 45 W. Devices without PD support or without DisplayPort Alt Mode will charge and transfer data but cannot drive a 4K 60 Hz display.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 2 m length or a shorter cable for my setup?

The 2 m length gives you 6.6 ft of reach for desk-to-monitor or dock connections without excess slack.

What does the 20 Gbps rating mean when I copy files to an external SSD?

You can move a full-length HD movie in under 30 seconds, and sustained transfers to a USB-C SSD run at the cable's 20 Gbps ceiling.

The cable mentions Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 2.2 — which standard actually limits my speed?

The cable is a USB 3.2 Gen 2.2 20 Gbps link that works with Thunderbolt 3 ports, but it is not compatible with Thunderbolt 4 ports.
