Dual-band managed access point with 54 Mbps data rates and PoE support
The HP 3850 is a managed wireless access point delivering 54 Mbps data rates under IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards. It connects to the wired network via a single RJ-45 interface and includes an omnidirectional antenna for signal coverage. The unit is powered through Power over Ethernet, removing the need for a local AC supply. It is built for integration into a centrally managed wireless LAN system.
This access point fits administrators deploying a 3Com Wireless LAN Mobility system with WX2200, WX1200 or WXR100 controllers. It provides simultaneous dual-radio operation for 802.11b/g and 802.11a clients alongside AES and WPA2 security with VLAN support. It is not for networks requiring throughput higher than 54 Mbps. It is not for installations that lack a PoE source or a compatible wireless controller for remote configuration.
The sole network connection is an RJ-45 port that also accepts PoE power. If the site cabling cannot deliver PoE or the switch port count is exhausted, this unit cannot be deployed. No separate power input exists, so the RJ-45 PoE capability is the single specification that determines whether this access point works in a given installation.

The 54 Mbps figure is the maximum raw data rate defined by the IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards. Real-world throughput will be lower due to protocol overhead, signal quality and the number of connected clients sharing the airtime.
The RJ-45 port connects the access point to the wired network at 10/100 Mbps Ethernet speed, so the wired link limits peak throughput to 100 Mbps even though the dual radios can each signal at 54 Mbps.
The access point is designed for ceiling or wall mounting using the brackets supplied in the box; it draws power through the RJ-45 port via Power over Ethernet so no separate AC outlet is required at the mounting location.
