500 GB 3.5" SATA drive for desktop and server bays

This HP 3.5-inch hard drive delivers 500 GB of storage at 7200 RPM over a SATA 3Gb/s interface. It ships new with a Smart Carrier caddy for hot-plug bays in compatible HP servers or workstations. The drive suits bulk storage, backup targets or secondary data volumes where sequential throughput matters more than latency.

Verify SATA 3Gb/s support and hot-plug bay clearance

Confirm the host system provides a 3.5-inch SATA 3Gb/s port and sufficient power for a 2.0-pound mechanical drive. The included Smart Carrier fits HP hot-plug trays; non-HP chassis may need an adapter or fixed-mount rails. Ensure the BIOS or RAID controller recognises 500 GB SATA devices before installation.

Enterprise-grade mechanics with tool-less carrier

The drive uses a 7200 RPM spindle and standard SATA data and power connectors housed in HP's Smart Carrier tray. The carrier enables tool-less insertion and removal in supported hot-plug bays, reducing service time. Metal construction and the carrier's latch mechanism protect the PCB and connectors during frequent swaps.

Questions about this item

Does the HP 459319-001 drive ship with the SMART CARRIER caddy or must I buy a tray separately?

The listing states the drive includes the SMART CARRIER caddy tray, so no separate tray purchase is required for hot-plug bays.

Should I choose the 3 Gb/s SATA version or a faster interface for this 500GB 7200RPM model?

This specific drive uses a 3 Gb/s SATA interface; there is no alternative interface option for this part number.

What does the 7200RPM rating mean for actual throughput on a 3 Gb/s SATA link?

The 7200RPM spindle supports sustained transfers up to the 3 Gb/s SATA limit, so real-world speeds will saturate that link.
