HP Jetdirect 600N EIO Print Server

The HP Jetdirect 600N is an EIO print server that adds network connectivity to compatible HP printers. It installs directly into an available EIO slot and provides a single RJ-45 port for wired Ethernet. The unit supports 10/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet over twisted-pair cabling. It is intended for offices that need to share a single printer across a local area network without a dedicated PC print host.

10/100Base-TX capacity and headroom

The Fast Ethernet link operates at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps half- or full-duplex, which is sufficient for typical document and graphics print jobs. Heavy colour raster streams or simultaneous high-volume queues can saturate the 100 Mbps pipe, causing job buffering at the printer. The single RJ-45 port means only one network segment can be connected; there is no built-in switching or wireless fallback.

EIO interface practical limits

The server draws power and communicates through the host printer's EIO slot, so it requires a printer model that exposes that interface. Protocols supported include HCRP and SPP for job submission and status monitoring. Because the link is limited to 10/100Base-TX, it cannot negotiate Gigabit speeds even if the network infrastructure supports them. Environments that have migrated to Gigabit-only switch ports may need to configure port speed manually.
