HP 500 GB 2.5" SATA drive

This HP 656107-001 drive provides 500 GB of storage in a 2.5-inch form factor for Gen8 servers. It operates at 7200 RPM over a SATA 6 Gb/s interface. The unit is sold new and carries the ST9500620NS model number.

SATA 6 Gb/s interface limits

The SATA 6 Gb/s link caps sequential throughput at the bus maximum, so sustained reads and writes cannot exceed that ceiling. Random I/O performance is bound by the 7200 RPM rotational speed and mechanical latency. The drive is designed for server bays and is not intended for laptop installation.

500 GB capacity and headroom

The 500 GB capacity suits operating system volumes, application bins and modest data sets in Gen8 systems. Heavy write workloads or large media libraries will fill the space quickly and push the mechanical limits. Buyers needing more capacity or faster random access should consider higher-capacity or solid-state alternatives.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 500 GB model or look for a larger capacity?

This part number is offered only as a 500 GB drive. If you need more space you must select a different HP part number.

How does the 7200 RPM spindle speed affect real-world performance in a server?

The 7200 RPM rotation delivers higher sequential throughput and lower access latency than slower-spinning drives, which benefits typical server workloads.

What does the 6 Gb/s SATA interface actually limit in practice?

The SATA 6 Gb/s link caps the maximum burst transfer rate at 6 Gb/s; sustained speeds will be lower and are determined by the drive's internal mechanics.
