HP EliteBook 840 G3 business laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch business laptop with a 1366 x 768 HD display. It runs on an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor at 2.40 GHz with a 3.00 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 16GB DDR3 memory and a new 500GB SATA SSD. It ships without an operating system installed.

Upgrading from older dual-core ultrabooks

This unit replaces aging ultrabooks limited to 4GB or 8GB soldered memory and mechanical drives. The jump is worth it when you need two memory slots supporting up to 32 GB total and a fresh 500GB SSD for faster boot and application load. Buyers who want more storage than 500GB or a higher-resolution panel should look elsewhere.

Sustained workload behaviour

Under continuous load the i5-6300U maintains clocks near its 3.00 GHz turbo while the integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 handles desktop video and light GPU tasks. The 16GB DDR3 configuration avoids swapping during typical office multitasking. Thermal throttling may appear during prolonged compile or render sessions on this 14.0 inch chassis.

Questions about this item

What size and interface does the drive bay use for the 500GB SSD?

The 500GB SSD is a 2.5" SATA drive, so the bay accepts a standard 2.5-inch SATA storage device.

How do I install an operating system when none is included?

Create a bootable USB installer for Windows or Linux, insert it, power on and press F9 to choose the USB, then follow the on-screen setup.

Can I add more RAM later and what is the limit?

Yes, there are two DDR3 slots supporting up to 32GB total, so you can add another module up to the 32GB maximum.
