HP EliteBook 840 G3 laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0-inch business laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor at 2.4 GHz. It comes with 8 GB DDR4 memory and a 128 GB SATA M.2 SSD. The Full HD display runs at 1920 x 1080 resolution with LED backlighting. Windows 10 Home is pre-installed.

Suits mobile professionals needing core connectivity

This unit fits users who rely on wired gigabit Ethernet, full-size DisplayPort, VGA and a USB 3.1 Type-C port for docking or peripheral attachment. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 uses shared system memory, so buyers who want discrete graphics for rendering or gaming should look at something else. The Grade B LCD shows visible wear such as scratches or worn keys, therefore buyers who require a pristine screen should consider a different grade.

128 GB SATA M.2 SSD capacity

The single specification that decides fit is the 128 GB SATA M.2 SSD. It provides solid-state speed but limited space for large media libraries or multiple virtual machines. Users who need more storage should look at a model with a larger drive.

Questions about this item

Does the dual-core i5-6300U throttle when all four threads run at 2.4 GHz for long periods?

The processor has 3 MB of L3 cache and two cores with four threads; sustained multi-threaded work will hit the thermal limit of the ultrabook chassis before the 2.4 GHz base clock can be held indefinitely.

How loud and hot does the EliteBook 840 G3 get during an all-day workload?

Integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 shares system memory and produces modest heat, while the fan spins up under continuous CPU load; surface temperatures stay warm but not extreme on the 14.0 inch FHD panel area.

Which cables or adapters must I already own to connect external displays?

The laptop provides one full-size DisplayPort and one VGA port, so a DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable or a VGA cable is needed for most modern monitors.
