14-inch business laptop for mobile professionals

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0-inch silver laptop powered by a dual-core Intel Core i5-6300U running at 2.40 GHz with a 3.00 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 32 GB of DDR3 memory and a new 500 GB NVMe M.2 SSD. No operating system is pre-installed, so the buyer must supply their own.

User-replaceable memory and storage

Two memory slots are fitted and already populated to the 32 GB maximum, so no further RAM upgrades are possible. The M.2 NVMe SSD is accessible after removing the bottom cover; care is needed not to damage the retaining screw or the fragile antenna cables routed nearby. The HD display is non-touch and uses a standard eDP connector.

Sustained workloads on integrated graphics

Intel HD Graphics 520 handles desktop productivity and video playback continuously without throttling. Under prolonged multi-core load the U-series processor will reduce clocks to stay within its thermal envelope, so compile times and heavy multitasking run slower than short bursts suggest. Fan noise becomes audible during extended high utilisation.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the Intel Core i5-6300U is running at its 3.00 GHz turbo after setup?

Open Task Manager in Windows or run lscpu in Linux and watch the live frequency climb to 3.00 GHz when a single core is under load.

What comes in the box and what must I supply myself?

The laptop, its AC adapter and the pre-installed 500GB M.2 NVMe drive arrive ready; you must provide an operating system licence and installation media.

Is the 32GB DDR3 configuration the maximum this 840 G3 can take?

Yes, the board has two slots and the 32GB fitted already reaches the 32 GB ceiling, so no further memory upgrade is possible.
