HP EliteBook 840 G3 laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0-inch business laptop running Windows 10 Pro. It uses an Intel Core i7-6500U dual-core processor with a base frequency of 2.50 GHz and a turbo of 3.10 GHz. The system includes 8GB of DDR3 memory and a new 500GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD for storage. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 drives the 1366 x 768 HD non-touch display.

Thermals and power in daily use

The low-power U-series processor helps keep heat and fan noise modest during typical office tasks such as document editing, web browsing and video calls. The 500GB NVMe SSD operates without moving parts, so it adds no mechanical noise and draws little power. Windows 10 Pro manages power states to extend battery run-time on the 14.0-inch HD panel.

Behaviour under sustained load

Under continuous multi-core workloads the dual-core CPU will reach its 3.10 GHz turbo before thermal limits throttle clocks back to protect the chassis. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 shares system memory, so extended 3D or compute tasks may pressure the 8GB DDR3 capacity. Memory can be expanded to 32 GB across two slots if workloads demand more headroom.

Questions about this item

How do I install the M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD and which screw size is commonly missed?

Remove the bottom cover, insert the M.2 NVMe PCIe drive at an angle into the slot, then secure it with the single small retaining screw — that tiny screw is the step most people lose.

Which memory modules will I need when the 8GB DDR3 feels tight and what is the ceiling?

The laptop has two DDR3 slots and supports up to 32 GB total, so you can add or replace with DDR3 SO-DIMMs to reach that limit.

At what point does the Intel HD Graphics 520 become the bottleneck during long rendering sessions?

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 shares system memory and has no dedicated VRAM, so sustained 3D or video workloads hit thermal and memory-bandwidth limits first.
