Business-ready 14-inch laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G4 is a compact business laptop built around a dual-core Intel Core i5-7300U processor running at 2.6 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a 1 TB NVMe PCIe M.2 solid-state drive. The 14.0-inch LED-backlit display offers a 1366 x 768 resolution without touch input. Windows 10 Home comes pre-installed.

Ports and expansion for a desk setup

Two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 Type-C connector handle peripherals and data transfer. A full-size DisplayPort and a VGA port drive external monitors, while a Gigabit RJ-45 jack provides wired networking. An 802.11 b/g/n wireless adapter and a SIM card reader add mobile connectivity options. The integrated 720p webcam supports video calls.

Memory and storage headroom

Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 memory gives comfortable headroom for multitasking with office suites, browser tabs and light virtual machines. The 1 TB NVMe drive delivers fast boot and application loads while storing large project files locally. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 uses shared system memory, so graphically intensive workloads will hit limits quickly.

Questions about this item

Will the dual-core i5-7300U throttle during long rendering jobs?

The processor runs at 2.6 GHz base with two cores and four threads; sustained heavy loads will hit thermal limits before the 3 MB L3 cache fills.

How loud and hot does the chassis get when the integrated HD 620 graphics share system memory all day?

Fan noise rises under continuous GPU load because the shared-memory design keeps the single heat pipe busy, but the 14.0" LED panel stays at typical office temperatures.

Which dock or monitor cables must I already own to use the video outputs on this unit?

You need a VGA cable for the legacy port or a full-size DisplayPort cable for the digital output; USB 3.1 Type-C on this model does not carry video.
