Business laptop with 14 inch display

The HP EliteBook 840 G4 is a 14.0 inch business laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-7300U dual-core processor at 2.6 GHz. It comes with 16 GB DDR4 memory and a 1 TB M.2 SATA SSD running Windows 10 Home. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 drives the 1366 x 768 LED panel.

Suits mobile professionals needing legacy ports

This unit fits users who require a full-size VGA port, DisplayPort, Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet and a USB 3.1 Type-C connector on a compact chassis. Buyers who want a touchscreen, a higher resolution panel or discrete graphics should look at something else.

1366 x 768 non-touch display decides fit

The 14 inch LED screen offers a 1366 x 768 resolution without touch input. If your workflow demands sharper text, colour-critical work or pen support, this panel will not meet those requirements.

Questions about this item

How do I install the M.2 SATA SSD in the 840 G4 and what step is often missed?

Insert the drive into the internal M.2 slot at a slight angle, press it down flat and secure it with the single retention screw; the step people forget is checking the BIOS afterwards to confirm the 1TB drive is detected before installing the OS.

What maintenance will the DDR4 memory and the 1TB M.2 SATA SSD need over time?

The 16GB DDR4 is soldered and not upgradeable, so no memory maintenance is required; the SSD has no moving parts, but you should monitor its health in Windows and keep at least 10% free space to preserve write performance.

What limit appears first when the i5-7300U runs sustained workloads?

The dual-core 2.6 GHz processor with 3 MB cache will hit thermal throttling before the Intel HD Graphics 620 or the 1366 x 768 display become bottlenecks, so expect clock speeds to drop during long compiles or video exports.
