Business-ready 14-inch laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G4 is a 14.0-inch laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-7300U dual-core processor running at 2.6 GHz with 3 MB L3 cache. It comes with 16 GB DDR4 memory and a 256 GB M.2 SATA SSD. The HD LED-backlit display offers 1366 x 768 resolution and integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 uses shared system memory. Windows 10 Home is pre-installed.

Connectivity and display limits

Wired networking tops out at 1000 Mbps over the RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet port. Wireless uses 802.11 b/g/n or better. Video output relies on one full-size DisplayPort and one VGA port; the single USB 3.1 Type-C port and two USB 3.0 ports handle data only. The non-touch 14.0-inch panel is fixed at 1366 x 768, so external monitors are needed for higher resolutions or multi-screen workflows.

Integrated graphics and fixed storage

The Intel HD Graphics 620 shares system RAM and has no dedicated video memory, limiting 3D performance to light workloads. Internal storage is a single 256 GB M.2 SATA SSD with no second drive bay mentioned, so capacity cannot be expanded internally. Buyers needing discrete graphics, more than 256 GB of onboard storage, or a touchscreen should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 256GB M.2 SATA SSD or look for a larger capacity?

The 256GB M.2 SATA SSD boots Windows 10 quickly and holds typical business documents, but large media libraries will need external storage.

What does the 2.6GHz i5-7300U actually deliver in daily work?

The dual-core 2.6GHz processor with 4 threads handles office apps, web browsing and video calls smoothly; heavy rendering will take longer.

What does the USB 3.1 Type-C port support in practice?

The USB 3.1 Type-C port carries data at up to 10 Gbps and drives an external display via DisplayPort alt mode; it does not charge the laptop.
