Business laptop for office work

The HP EliteBook 840 G4 is a 14.0 inch laptop built around an Intel Core i5-7300U dual-core processor running at 2.6 GHz with 3 MB cache. It comes with 8 GB DDR4 memory and a 256 GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. Windows 10 Home is pre-installed. The 1366 x 768 LED display is non-touch. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 uses shared system memory.

Ports and expansion for desk setups

Two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 Type C port handle peripherals and data. A full-size DisplayPort and a VGA port drive external monitors. Gigabit RJ-45 provides wired networking. Wireless 802.11 b/g/n or better covers Wi-Fi. A SIM card reader is present for mobile broadband. The laptop includes its charger and battery.

Memory and storage limits for everyday loads

The 8 GB DDR4 soldered memory cannot be upgraded, so heavy multitasking or virtual machines will hit the ceiling. The 256 GB NVMe SSD offers fast boot and application loading but fills quickly with large media libraries or project archives. Integrated graphics suits office apps and video playback; it is not suited for 3D rendering or modern gaming.

Questions about this item

Does the dual-core i5-7300U throttle under sustained heavy load?

The Intel Core i5-7300U runs at 2.6 GHz with two cores and 3 MB L3 cache; under continuous demand the processor will reduce clocks to stay within its thermal envelope.

How loud and hot does the EliteBook 840 G4 get during an all-day workload?

The 14.0" LED-backlit chassis uses integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 and a low-voltage CPU, so fan noise stays modest and surface temperatures remain comfortable for typical office tasks.

What must I already own to use the USB Type-C and DisplayPort outputs?

You need a monitor or dock that accepts a full-size DisplayPort plug or a USB 3.1 Type-C cable; the laptop provides one of each port for external displays.
